The area school phenomenon in Zimbabwe
In 1994, 60 children at a local school in Ruwa reported seeing a UFO and an alien with large eyes near their schoolyard. The story was shared around the world and soon everyone started coming to the school to talk to the students and teachers about this mysterious encounter.
The children claimed to have witnessed an unknown craft descend from the sky and land in the nearby field. The incident would become known as the area’s school phenomenon, and in UFO circles it became very popular.
A fairly normal day began at break, with teachers staying indoors for a staff conference, while some children claimed to have seen a silvery disc land on a hill outside the boundaries. The children reportedly ran to the edge of the school grounds to get a better look, with several claiming they saw figures emerging from what they described as a craft.
The children described the event, which they reported had lasted up to 15 minutes, to their teachers after recess, but were treated with much justified scepticism. However, when they told their parents what had happened that evening, they had questions that they later put to the college. With this encouragement, and the intervention of a local UFO investigator, the school principal asked the children to draw what they had seen.
They returned with strikingly similar images of classic silver crafts, sometimes complete with bonus figurines. They appeared to be shining on trees. “It looked like a disc, like a round disc,” one witness told the BBC a few days after the incident. Another said the children were also interviewed by local investigators after the event.
The UFO figures, despite interpreting the phenomenon very differently from their own creation, believed that the different interpretations, accompanied by similar drawings and descriptions, gave credibility to the idea that the children witnessed the same event.
A Harvard psychiatry professor then came to interview the children, and a new narrative emerged that the children reported receiving telepathic messages.
