Researchers are now examining distant atmospheres for potentially interesting chemical signatures while radio observatories search for possible technological signals. None has yet provided universally accepted evidence of an intelligent civilization. That leaves an extraordinary gap between what appears statistically possible in the universe and what humanity has actually confirmed.
