NASA’s overview of Webb observations of K2-18 b Even more provocative research has investigated possible evidence for molecules such as dimethyl sulfide, or DMS, and dimethyl disulfide, or DMDS. On Earth, DMS is strongly associated with biological processes, particularly marine microorganisms, which makes any potential detection beyond Earth extremely interesting.

![""]("https://ufosecret.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sddefault-19-300x225.jpg")

But researchers have repeatedly emphasized that the evidence remains uncertain and that such molecules would not constitute proof of life by themselves. Independent observations, stronger statistical confidence and a detailed understanding of possible non-biological chemistry would be required before scientists could make such an extraordinary claim. This distinction is crucial because the word “signal” can be misleading.

Astronomers can detect electromagnetic signals from planets without those signals being deliberate transmissions. A telescope might measure infrared radiation produced by a planet’s atmosphere, radio emission generated through interactions between a planet and its star, or changes in starlight caused when a planet crosses in front of its host star. Scientists analyze these patterns to determine atmospheric composition, temperature and other physical characteristics.

SETI researchers take a different approach, searching specifically for technological signatures that might indicate artificial transmitters. Previous mysterious radio detections have occasionally generated worldwide excitement. The famous BLC1 signal, for example, appeared to originate from the direction of Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun, before detailed investigation concluded that it was most likely terrestrial radio interference rather than extraterrestrial technology.

Such cases demonstrate why astronomers are extremely cautious before describing any unexplained signal as evidence of aliens. The image above, showing a powerful beam apparently traveling between a radio telescope and a damaged planet, is therefore best understood as an artistic visualization rather than a photograph of a confirmed astronomical event.

No telescope can currently photograph a distant exoplanet with that level of surface detail, and there is no verified evidence that scientists have received a warning or message from another inhabited world. Yet the authentic science may ultimately be more important than the sensational imagery.

Modern telescopes have reached the point where researchers can investigate the atmospheric chemistry of planets located dozens or hundreds of light-years away, while increasingly sophisticated radio searches scan nearby star systems for unusual technological signals.
