The mission lifted off from Starbase, Texas, on September 28, 2026, with all 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster firing at launch.

During ascent, one booster engine shut down, but the rocket continued climbing and successfully executed hot-stage separation, allowing the Starship upper stage to accelerate toward space. SpaceX The most dramatic moment came when one of Starship’s vacuum-optimized Raptor engines shut down prematurely. For several tense minutes, it was unclear whether the spacecraft would be able to accomplish the mission’s central objective.

The remaining engines continued operating, and after engineers assessed the spacecraft’s condition, controllers authorized an orbital insertion maneuver. Starship successfully entered orbit—something none of its previous full-scale test flights had achieved. Fortune But SpaceX was not finished. Once in orbit, Starship deployed 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites, marking the vehicle’s first delivery of meaningful payload to orbit and demonstrating one of the capabilities SpaceX ultimately wants Starship to perform routinely. All 26 satellites were subsequently contacted, according to mission reporting.

SpaceX Flight 14 was originally intended to last roughly 10 hours and complete multiple orbits, but following the earlier engine anomaly, SpaceX decided to shorten the mission as a precaution. After approximately three hours in space, Starship performed its first deorbit maneuver from a true Earth orbit, survived atmospheric reentry and descended toward a planned splashdown zone in the Pacific north of Hawaii.

Spaceflight Now The Super Heavy booster had already completed its own experimental return sequence, splashing down in the Gulf after SpaceX deliberately pushed parts of its propulsion system toward demanding test conditions. The achievement is particularly significant because Starship is being designed as a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying massive payloads—and eventually astronauts—to Earth orbit, the Moon and Mars.

SpaceX’s official Flight 14 page NASA also has a major interest in Starship’s development because a modified version is part of the agency’s lunar exploration architecture. Yet the accompanying image showing Starship docking with what resembles a space station should be regarded as an illustrative concept rather than documentation of Flight 14; the mission did not perform such a docking maneuver.

Nor did scientists claim that Starship literally violated the laws of physics. What makes the achievement feel “impossible” is the scale of the engineering challenge. After thirteen integrated test flights that progressively pushed the vehicle farther, Flight 14 finally combined orbital insertion, satellite deployment, controlled deorbit and atmospheric return into a single mission.

The engine malfunction also serves as a reminder that Starship remains an experimental vehicle with significant technical challenges ahead. Still, Flight 14 may ultimately be remembered as the moment the program changed categories—from an enormous experimental rocket repeatedly approaching orbit to an actual orbital transportation system.

Starship did not perform the impossible, but it accomplished something SpaceX had spent years trying to prove was possible—and that distinction could have enormous consequences for the future of spaceflight. Reuters

SpaceX’s Flight 14 Just Did Something Impossible — Scientists Are Stunned SpaceX’s Starship has crossed a threshold that once seemed extraordinarily difficult for the world’s largest rocket system: Flight 14 successfully reached Earth orbit for the first time, transforming years of explosive tests, lost vehicles and incremental improvements into a historic milestone for the program.
