Its Legacy Survey of Space and Time is designed to revisit the visible sky continually for ten years, producing a cosmic motion picture rather than a collection of isolated portraits.

This approach allows Rubin to discover events that Webb could easily miss—not because Webb is less powerful, but because it cannot watch such a vast area at once.

During an early operational milestone, Rubin issued about 800,000 alerts in a single night, directing scientists toward new asteroids, exploding stars and other objects that had changed brightness or position.

The alert system is eventually expected to identify millions of changes every night.

Rubin’s preliminary data also produced more than 11,000 previously unknown asteroids, including hundreds of distant bodies beyond Neptune and 33 new near-Earth asteroids.

The discoveries were extracted from roughly one million observations collected over only six weeks, offering a preview of how dramatically the observatory could expand humanity’s inventory of the solar system.

Its wide view will also help catch supernovae soon after they erupt, track stars torn apart by black holes, map the Milky Way and measure how dark matter bends the light of distant galaxies.

One deep Rubin image of the COSMOS field already contains more than half a million galaxies and over 50,000 stars, assembled by stacking hundreds of observations.

Dramatic online images may portray Rubin as having discovered a gigantic artificial structure or a threatening cosmic object, but such additions should be treated as illustrations unless supported by released scientific data.

The claim that “James Webb is over” is also incorrect. Webb remains an active observatory with capabilities Rubin cannot reproduce, especially at infrared wavelengths.

The real scientific revolution will come from using the two facilities together. Rubin can rapidly discover a transient object and issue an alert; Webb can then investigate it in depth, identifying its temperature, chemistry and physical environment.

Rubin is the universe’s wide-angle surveillance camera, while Webb is its powerful forensic microscope.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="James Webb Is Over!
