The distant world, known as HIP 65426 b, is a young gas giant orbiting a hot star hundreds of light-years from Earth. Rather than detecting the planet indirectly through its gravitational pull or the tiny dimming it causes when crossing its star, astronomers recorded infrared light coming from the planet itself. NASA’s published image presents HIP 65426 b in four infrared wavelength bands observed by Webb’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments.

Each view assigns a different visible color to otherwise invisible infrared radiation, helping scientists compare the planet’s temperature and atmospheric properties. The achievement required overcoming one of astronomy’s most difficult imaging problems. Stars are vastly brighter than their planets, and their glare can overwhelm the faint planetary signal. Webb used coronagraphs—small masks inside its instruments—to block the host star’s light, creating an artificial eclipse that allowed the planet to emerge from the surrounding glare. HIP 65426 b was a favorable target because it travels approximately 92 astronomical units from its star, or about 92 times the distance between Earth and the Sun. That broad separation made the two objects easier to distinguish. NASA’s catalog describes the planet as roughly nine times the mass of Jupiter, with an estimated orbital period of more than six centuries. Despite headlines calling this the first “real image” of another planet, an important distinction is necessary: astronomers had directly photographed exoplanets before Webb began operating. This was Webb’s first direct exoplanet image, not humanity’s first. Nor does the picture reveal continents, oceans, clouds or a detailed planetary surface. HIP 65426 b remains an unresolved point of infrared light, and the dramatic globe frequently shown in online thumbnails is an artistic illustration. Nevertheless, the authentic observation is scientifically powerful because the planet appears differently at different wavelengths, allowing researchers to test atmospheric models and investigate how young giant worlds form and evolve. Webb has since directly imaged additional gas giants, including multiple planets in the HR 8799 system, demonstrating that the telescope can separate faint worlds from their stars and study their chemistry. These techniques could eventually help astronomers characterize smaller and cooler planets, although photographing an Earth-like world close to a Sun-like star remains far more challenging. HIP 65426 b itself is not considered habitable: it is a massive, hot gas giant without a solid surface like Earth’s. What stunned scientists was not the discovery of a second Earth, but the precision with which Webb isolated light from a remote world.

That faint signal marks another step toward a future in which astronomers can examine planets around other stars not merely as statistics, but as individual worlds with their own temperatures, atmospheres and histories.

Scientists Can’t Believe What James Webb Captured—Its First Direct Image of Another Planet!
