The European Space Agency’s Euclid telescope has captured a remarkable collection of distant cosmic objects, including two record-breaking quasars powered by supermassive black holes that existed when the universe was only about 670 million years old.

The discovery forms part of a group of 31 ancient quasars identified in Euclid’s Wide Survey, more than doubling the number known from this extremely early period of cosmic history. The two most distant examples, cataloged as EUCL J172902.75+641018.1 and EUCL J125308.55+705432.3, are located more than 13 billion light-years away and appear as they did when the universe was only around five percent of its current age.

Each quasar shone with the light of approximately one trillion Suns, its extraordinary energy generated as gas and dust spiraled into an actively feeding supermassive black hole. These objects are “terrifying” not because they threaten Earth, but because their enormous size and brightness raise a profound scientific mystery. Under traditional models, black holes formed from the remnants of the first massive stars and then grew gradually by consuming surrounding matter or merging with other black holes.

Finding such powerful quasars less than 700 million years after the Big Bang means their central black holes must have accumulated mass with astonishing speed. Scientists are investigating whether the first black-hole seeds were much larger than expected, whether they experienced unusually rapid feeding, or whether some early black holes formed through the direct collapse of enormous gas clouds.

Euclid was designed primarily to map the distribution of galaxies across more than one-third of the sky, helping researchers investigate dark matter, dark energy, gravity, and the expansion of the universe. Its wide field of view also makes it exceptionally effective at finding rare objects that narrower telescopes could easily miss. The observatory’s expanding data set already contains tens of millions of galaxies, while artificial-intelligence systems and citizen scientists are examining hundreds of thousands of images for strong gravitational lenses—strange arcs and rings created when massive foreground galaxies bend the light of objects located behind them.

Such distorted structures can look artificial or unsettling, but they are natural demonstrations of gravity warping spacetime. The group of dark triangular craft shown flying above Earth in the accompanying viral thumbnail does not appear in any official Euclid image.

It is digitally created artwork rather than evidence of an alien fleet, and ESA or NASA has issued no related emergency warning. Euclid operates approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth and is optimized to observe extremely distant galaxies; it is not a planetary-defense camera monitoring spacecraft in our atmosphere. The authentic images may appear less cinematic, but their implications are far more important.
