Something strange is happening around\u00a03I\/ATLAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The interstellar comet has already passed through the inner Solar System.<\/p>\n

The images revealed changing dust and coma structures as the comet moved past Mars.<\/p>\n

Tianwen-1 was able to observe 3I\/ATLAS from a dramatically different angle.<\/p>\n

Researchers found evidence of large dust grains surrounding the nucleus.<\/p>\n

They also estimated dust leaving the comet at several metres per second.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Tianma radio telescope produced another intriguing result.<\/p>\n

It detected substantial water vapour and carbon monoxide as the comet approached the Sun.<\/p>\n

Some of that water apparently came from icy grains inside the coma rather than directly from the nucleus.<\/p>\n

Then came the Webb observations.<\/p>\n

NASA\u2019s telescope detected methane.<\/p>\n

It also found an unusually high amount of carbon dioxide compared with water.<\/p>\n

That combination is unusual among comets formed in our own Solar System.<\/p>\n

The newest measurements go further.<\/p>\n

Webb detected unusual carbon and deuterium ratios that researchers say provide clues about where this ancient object formed.<\/p>\n

And that is where the mystery starts becoming difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n

Because 3I\/ATLAS is not merely another\u00a0comet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It came from another stellar system.<\/p>\n

We are examining material that formed somewhere beyond our own Solar System billions of years ago.<\/p>\n

And every new measurement gives us another glimpse into that unknown environment.<\/p>\n
