In 2003, an unidentified flying object the size of a football field reportedly hovered over Vandenberg Air Force Base, according to a hearing of the House Oversight Committee’s national security subcommittee on UFOs. The hearing, held Wednesday, investigated UFOs, now referred to as “unidentified anomalous phenomena” by the U.S. government.
The proceedings included whistleblower accounts that shed light on alleged government UFO programs spanning several decades, according to retired Maj. David Grusch. Former Navy fighter pilot Ryan Graves, founder of the nonprofit Americans for Safe Aerospace, testified about the alleged UFO sighting at Vandenberg.

During questioning by Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, Graves recounted the 2003 incident:
“In the early 2003 period, a sizable group of Boeing contractors near the Vandenberg launch facility observed a large, 100-yard red square approaching from the ocean. It hovered low over the launch facility for about 45 seconds before quickly shooting off into the mountains at about 8:45 a.m.”
Graves further described a subsequent event 24 hours later involving additional sightings at the base, with some objects exhibiting aggressive behavior toward security guards. The information, according to Graves, came from a witness who approached him at Americans for Safe Aerospace, and that witness had documented police records and records of the 2003 incidents.
Testimony from former Major Grusch and former U.S. intelligence officer David Fravor was also part of the hearing, although they refrained from answering certain questions. Rep. Tim Burchett emphasized the importance of government transparency in addressing the issue, saying the goal was to uncover the facts without sensationalizing the matter.
